Focus and Scope

Journal of Occupational Health, Hygiene and Safety (JOHHS) is a scientific journal published by the Bachelor's Program in Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (UDINUS). JOHHS provides a platform for the dissemination of original research articles, literature reviews, and case reports in the field of public health, with a particular focus on occupational safety, health, and environmental work.

JOHHS welcomes manuscripts within the following scientific scope:

  1. Industrial Toxicology
  2. Industrial Hygiene
  3. Occupational Health
  4. Occupational Safety
  5. Industrial Psychology
  6. Ergonomics
  7. Risk Management (Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Risk Communication)

Article Types

JOHHS publishes three main types of articles:

  • Original Research Articles -reporting original empirical research relevant to the journal's scope, 5–10 pages (excluding abstract, tables, figures, and references).
  • Literature Reviews -critical, systematic, or scoping reviews synthesizing existing evidence in occupational health, hygiene, and safety.
  • Case Reports -documenting notable occupational health/safety cases with clear practical or scientific implications.

All submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published or be under consideration elsewhere.

Peer Review Process

This journal follows a double-blind peer review process to ensure the quality, validity, and originality of published work.

Initial Editorial Assessment Submitted manuscripts are first checked by the editor for compliance with the journal's scope, formatting guidelines, and originality (screened via Turnitin, maximum similarity 20%). Manuscripts that do not meet these criteria may be declined or returned to the authors for preliminary revision before further consideration.

Review Process Manuscripts that pass the initial assessment are assigned to a minimum of two independent reviewers with relevant expertise. Reviewer and author identities remain confidential throughout the process. Reviewers assess manuscripts based on originality, scientific merit, methodology, clarity, and relevance to the journal's scope, and may recommend acceptance, minor revision, major revision, or rejection.

Decision-Making Process The final decision to accept or reject a manuscript is made by the Editor-in-Chief, based on reviewers' recommendations. If reviewer recommendations diverge significantly, the editor may seek a third reviewer's assessment.

Revision Timeline Authors are given the opportunity to revise their manuscript according to reviewer feedback within a specified timeframe. Manuscripts with no progress within three months will be automatically rejected.

Publication Frequency

Journal of Occupational Health, Hygiene and Safety (JOHHS) is published biannually, in July and December, and is available exclusively online.

Open Access Statement and Policy

JOHHS is an open access journal, providing immediate and unrestricted access to all published content. This policy supports the global exchange of knowledge and ensures that research findings are freely available to readers without subscription or payment barriers. All articles may be read, downloaded, copied, distributed, and used for lawful, non-commercial purposes, provided proper attribution is given to the original authors and source, in accordance with the license described below.

Copyright Notice

Authors retain the copyright of their published work and grant JOHHS the right of first publication. The work is simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0), which permits others to share, copy, and redistribute the material in any medium or format -and adapt, remix, transform, or build upon it -provided that:

  • Attribution -appropriate credit is given, a link to the license is provided, and any changes made are indicated.
  • NonCommercial -the material is not used for commercial purposes.
  • ShareAlike -any derivative work is distributed under the same license as the original.

Authors may enter into separate, non-exclusive distribution agreements for the published version of their work (e.g., posting to an institutional repository or including it in a book), with acknowledgment of its initial publication in JOHHS. Authors are also permitted and encouraged to share their work online -for example, in an institutional repository or on a personal website -both before and during the submission process.

Archiving

This journal is committed to the long-term preservation and continued accessibility of its published content. To safeguard against the loss of scholarly content, this journal utilizes multiple digital preservation systems:

  1. LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) -This journal is preserved through the LOCKSS system, a distributed archiving network that allows participating libraries to create permanent, secure archives of the journal's content for purposes of preservation and restoration.   2. CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS) -This journal also participates in CLOCKSS, a not-for-profit joint venture between the world's leading academic publishers and research libraries, which maintains a geographically and geopolitically distributed archive to ensure the content remains permanently available and open to all in the event the journal is no longer published.   3. PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN) -This journal utilizes the PKP Preservation Network, a distributed digital archiving system among participating libraries, providing an additional layer of redundant preservation. Learn more at https://pkp.sfu.ca/pkp-pn/.
  4. Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) -Every published article is assigned a persistent DOI via Crossref, ensuring stable and citable access to content over the long term.

Through this combination of preservation systems, JOHHS ensures that all published articles remain permanently accessible to readers and researchers, even if the journal's website or publishing platform were to become unavailable in the future.

Manuscript Submission and Publishing

Manuscript Submission Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format directly through the journal's official Open Journal System (OJS). Manuscripts submitted via email or hard copy will not be considered.

Manuscript Publishing The feasibility of a manuscript for publication is determined by the Editorial Board based on reviewers' recommendations. Manuscript revision is the responsibility of the author; manuscripts deemed unfeasible for publication will be returned to the author.

Screening of Plagiarism and AI-Generated Content

JOHHS maintains a strict policy against plagiarism to ensure the integrity and originality of all published work. All submitted manuscripts are screened using Turnitin at both the initial submission and pre-publication stages. A maximum similarity index of 20% is permitted; manuscripts exceeding this threshold are returned to authors for revision and resubmission.

The journal considers the following forms of misconduct unacceptable: direct copying without proper citation, inappropriate paraphrasing, citation of sources not consulted, and self-plagiarism (duplicate or redundant publication). Authors are expected to ensure proper acknowledgment of all sources and submit only original work.

Manuscripts are also screened for AI-generated content, with a maximum threshold of 20%. Any use of generative AI tools in the preparation of the manuscript must be disclosed in accordance with the journal's AI and Research Integrity policy.

Article Processing Charges (APC)

No Submission Fee JOHHS does not charge authors any manuscript submission fee. No payment is required when submitting a manuscript to the journal.

Payment After Acceptance The Article Processing Charge (APC) applies only to manuscripts that have been formally accepted for publication after completing the editorial assessment and peer-review process.

What the APC Covers The Article Processing Charge supports the journal's editorial, production, and dissemination services, including plagiarism/similarity screening, editorial management, peer-review administration, manuscript formatting and layout, Crossref DOI registration, metadata management and indexing, online publication, and digital preservation.

Editorial Independence Payment of the Article Processing Charge does not influence editorial decisions or the peer-review process. All manuscripts are evaluated based on scientific quality, methodological rigor, originality, ethical compliance, and relevance to the journal's focus and scope.

APC Waiver Policy JOHHS recognizes that the ability to pay an Article Processing Charge should never determine whether sound scientific work is published. Corresponding authors who are unable to pay the full APC may request a full or partial waiver by submitting a written request to the editorial office (johhs@fkes.dinus.ac.id) at the time of manuscript acceptance, stating the reason for the request. Waiver requests are evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief independently of the peer-review outcome and do not affect the editorial decision already made. Priority consideration is given to:

  • Authors affiliated with institutions in low- and middle-income countries;
  • Independent researchers or students without institutional funding support;
  • Authors who can demonstrate a genuine lack of financial support (e.g., no grant, no institutional funding).

The decision on waiver requests is communicated in writing and is final.

Retraction and Correction Policy

JOHHS follows the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines on retractions and corrections. Authors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these guidelines at https://publicationethics.org/retraction-guidelines.

Corrections, expressions of concern, or retractions of published articles are issued solely on editorial and scientific grounds -such as confirmed data errors, undisclosed conflicts of interest, plagiarism, duplicate publication, or other violations of publication ethics -following an investigation by the Editor-in-Chief in consultation with the Editorial Board. No administrative or financial penalty is imposed on authors for a retraction or correction issued through this process, as doing so would discourage authors from voluntarily reporting genuine errors in their own published work.

Requests to withdraw a manuscript that is still under review (prior to publication) should be submitted in writing to the editorial office with a clear explanation, as early withdrawal may affect the time and resources committed by reviewers and editors. Repeated or unexplained withdrawal requests during the review process may be taken into account in future submissions from the same author(s).
