"Khumba: Simplifying Identity and Acceptance Through Translation"

Abstract

The animated movie “Khumba” tells the story of a zebra born without a black stripe who tries to find an identity and be accepted by his community. This study investigates how translation methods and techniques work well when conveying messages to a children's audience in the target language by using a strategic reduction approach that simplifies important elements such as themes, characters and dialog. The results of the analysis show that cultural adaptation and contextual translation are essential to maintain the relevance of the movie. Moral messages about courage and self-acceptance can be conveyed more effectively through the use of simple language and appropriate humor. Although some of the original cultural components have been removed, the main message of the movie can still be understood by the target audience. In conclusion of this study, effective translation methods are essential to convey the message of children's films in full. Recommendations for future movie translation include the use of appropriate language to enhance children's understanding and cultural context. It is hoped that this research will help translators and filmmakers create more inclusive and comprehensible works.
