https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13628

Language is constantly evolving, especially in digital spaces where cultures intersect. This
study delves into code-mixing in the GOLDNRUSH podcast, specifically in the episode "Cyber Rui no
Imada Katsute Katararenakatta Monogatari." By drawing on Ronald Wardhaugh’s theoretical
framework, and Otsuji and Pennycook's concept of metrolingualism, it explores how and why Japanese
speakers incorporate English into their conversations. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with
discourse analysis, this research examines podcast transcriptions to uncover patterns of English
insertions within Japanese speech. The findings reveal that speakers use code-mixing to express
emotions, enhance clarity, and assert social identity, particularly within Japan’s entertainment and music
industries. Based on the data obtained, the code-mixing that occurs is intra sentential code-mixing, where
several English vocabulary items are inserted into Japanese utterances, indicating the presence of code
mixing phenomena. This study sheds light on the dynamic relationship between language and society in
digital media. It offers valuable insights into how bilingual speakers navigate linguistic choices,
contributing to a deeper understanding of language use in an increasingly globalized world.
Bramandita FirnandiBayu Aryanto

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13626

This study analyzes how translation techniques are used in expressive speech in the anime
Haikyuu!! on Netflix official subtitles. Expressive speech is an expression that shows the speaker's
feelings, emotions, or attitudes. In translation, it is important to preserve the meaning and nuance of the
emotion to match the original context. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to identify the
expressive speech translation techniques used in translating expressive speech acts from Japanese to
Indonesian. The data were obtained from the transcription of dialogues in the anime and their
translations, then analyzed based on Molina and Albir's (2002) theory of translation techniques. The
results showed that several translation techniques are often used, including 8 types: amplification,
modulation, transposition, established equivalent, reduction, calque, generalization, and literal
translation. Overall, the translation techniques used by the do not just translate word for word, but
additionally evaluate the circumstances, identities of characters, and emotions to be expressed in the
dialogue. As a result, selecting the appropriate translation process is critical to ensuring that the audience
receives the message and expressive nuances in their original form. The results are expected to help
translators in understanding the challenges of translating expressive speech, in particular audiovisual
media such as anime.
Aldira AprilianiAkhmad Saifudin

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13629

When people communicate, they use language to create interpersonal meaning and exchange
information. This research aims to analyze the speech function found in the conversation between Arthur
Fleck and his mother, Penny Fleck in the movie Joker (2019). It focuses especially on the confronting
responses produced by Arthur and Penny, by applying the framework of speech function developed by
Halliday (1985). A descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyze the data, by classifying
Arthur and Penny’s utterances and labelling them into the types of confronting responses. The findings
reveal that the relationship between Arthur and Penny was heavily characterized by disclaimer and
contradiction in their conversation, indicating an emotional disobedience and dysfunctional relationship
between them. Contradictions are found to be the dominant speech function in their conversation,
implying the disagreement and clashing perceptions between them. Disclaimers are the second highest
finding, suggesting the avoidance in answering questions in their relationship. It can be concluded that
negative responses in the conversation may indicate a crack or a sign of a dysfunctional relationship
between individuals. Furthermore, this research suggests that language can be used as a tool to observe
tension and issues in a family setting using the framework of speech function.
Affan Indar Kukuh WicaksonoNina Setyaningsih

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13630

The term “yandere” in Japanese popular culture refers to a fictional character who harbors an
intense and obsessive love for someone, to the extent that they are willing to commit extreme acts,
including violence or even murder. The objective of this study is to examine Japanese perceptions of
yandere characters, explore the factors contributing to their popularity in Japan, and analyze potential
reactions if individuals were to encounter a yandere personality in real life. This study employs a
qualitative research method, utilizing a survey administered to fifteen Japanese individuals who have an
interest in anime and manga. The analysis is conducted using Gerbner’s Cultivation Theory (1976) to
interpret Japanese perspectives on yandere characters based on the collected survey data. The findings
indicate that while most Japanese respondents express a dislike for yandere characters and prefer to
distance themselves from them, a minority perceives such characters as appealing, viewing them as a
representation of an intense and devoted form of love that has gained cultural traction in Japan.
Furthermore, 80% of respondents believe that yandere behavior is plausible in real life, particularly
within the context of romantic relationships.
Vinie Almira Nur SabrinaPipiet Furisari

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13631

This study examines Ametora style in Japan. Ametora or American Traditional is one of the
popular fashion street styles in Japan. The purpose of this study is to examine the process of cultural
hybridization between western and Japanese cultures. The data sources in this study were obtained from
books and visual documentation such as catalogs, lookbooks, and advertisements from Japanese brands
such as Beams+ which feature the Ametora style. The research method that will be used is a qualitative
descriptive method. The theory used is the Cultural Hybridity theory. This theory explains how local
and global cultures not only collide but also blend and form new identities. This hybridization process
will later form a new resistance and negotiation for a group of people in social relations between Western
culture and Japanese culture. Ametora's style of dress, which was originally an adoption of the traditional
American style, then underwent a process of reinterpretation by Japanese society through a blend of
local aesthetic values, social needs, and unique cultural sensitivities. This research will show that
Japanese society creatively adapts foreign fashion elements to become part of local identity through
visualizations strengthened by brands such as Beams+.
Rama Ray Rigil KentDiah Soelistyowati

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13635

This study explores the cultural and social transformations that defined Britain during the
1960s and 1970s, emphasizing how these decades are reinterpreted in the digital age. The 1960s are
characterized as a period of youthful optimism, cultural revolution, and the rise of progressive social
movements, while the 1970s reflect a shift toward economic crisis, political instability, and growing
public disillusionment. By employing digital humanities tools such as online archives, oral histories,
and interactive platforms, the research examines how marginalized voices, including those of
immigrants, women, and working-class communities, are being rediscovered and integrated into
broader public memory. The study highlights how digital media enables more participatory, inclusive,
and critical engagements with the past, challenging traditional historical narratives. Ultimately, the
research underscores the continuity between the two decades, illustrating how the ideals of the 1960s
evolved, endured, and encountered resistance throughout the 1970s. https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13670

This study aims to examine the role of women's empowerment in traditional culinary micro,
small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as a form of implementation of Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) number 5, namely gender equality, in the Yogyakarta region. Women play an important
role in the traditional culinary sector, both as business actors, product innovators, and family economic
drivers. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with in-depth interview methods and
participatory observation of female MSME actors in the traditional culinary sector. Data analysis
techniques are carried out interactively through the process of data reduction, data presentation, and
drawing conclusions (Miles & Huberman, 1994). The results of the study show that women's
involvement in traditional culinary MSMEs contributes significantly to increasing economic
independence, social recognition, and strengthening women's roles in household economic decision
making. However, challenges such as access to capital, double workload, and limited digital literacy are
still obstacles. Therefore, women's empowerment in this sector needs to be supported through inclusive
policies, entrepreneurship training, and strengthening digital-based marketing networks. https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13699

In general, people are quite familiar with the types or varieties of Arabica coffee. However,
the majority of customers only consume Arabica coffee that we usually find them on the market, namely
coffee beans. However, many do not know that Arabica coffee has waste from the peeling process
(depulping) which turns out to have many benefits. The objectives that researchers want to achieve
include determining the level of consumer preference for "cascara Arabica" coffee products with
"regular Arabica" coffee in terms of aroma, acidity, weight, taste, aftertaste, and sweetness. The type of
research used in this study is included in the experimental method, and the data analysis technique used
in this study is hedonic test analysis using a Likert scale. In this study, it can be concluded that "regular
Arabica" coffee is more in demand by consumers because it has more prominent advantages in 5
indicators, namely in the aroma, acidity, weight, taste, and aftertaste indicators. While "cascara Arabica"
coffee only has advantages in 1 indicator, namely the sweetness indicator. The most distinguishing
factor between these two products is that “cascara Arabica” coffee comes from dried coffee fruit skin,
while “regular Arabica” coffee comes from coffee beans that are dried and then roasted.
Obed Faejuan Parulian Ardota KrisdeoMaria Barbara ElnaEnny Mulyantari

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13673

The trend of modern society's consumption patterns is currently shifting. Food consumption
is no longer just to fill the stomach but must also support body health. Currently, many people are
starting to reduce rice consumption because of the sugar content in it. Instead, consumption of
vegetables, fruits, and meat is increasing. However, the use of broccoli is still relatively limited and less
in demand when consumed directly. This study uses a descriptive experimental method, which is a study
that aims to determine the value of the independent variable without comparing or connecting it with
other variables. The data collection technique was carried out through interviews with three expert
experts. The results of the study showed that the optimal formulation was obtained in the experiment
using 80% green broccoli flour and 20% wheat flour, as well as the addition of powdered milk and
vanilla. This formulation produces tartlet skin that meets the standards of taste, texture, aroma, color,
and appearance that are in accordance with the researcher's expectations and can be accepted by experts
in the fields of pastry and bakery.
Putri Febiyola FebiyolaSahlit SugestiEnny Karmin

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13798

This research analyzes the social class struggle in the novel Great Expectations by Charles
Dickens through the perspective of Marxist theory. The novel Great Expectations describes the life
journey of Pip, an orphan from a poor family who dreams to become a gentleman. Although many
researches have discussed this novel, but there is a gap of literature which has not deeply examined the
application of Marxist theory in the analysis of classic literature, especially the novel Great
Expectations. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to fill the gap by analyzing the social class
struggle in the novel Great Expectations. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, by
collecting data from the novel and secondary sources such as books, journals, articles, and online
sources. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis method to identify the main patterns
relevant to Marxist theory. The results of the research show that social class struggle is apparent in the
structures of occupation, authority, and property that illustrate social inequality. The impact of social
class struggle is also apparent in the personal relationship and moral of each individual, which creates
deep internal conflicts. Great Expectations criticizes social class inequalities which are still relevant
today, and despite changes in social status, the inequality between the proletariat class and the bourgeois
class still exists and continues.
Indah Sukma WahyuniEndang Susilowati

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/13756

This research aims to identify the types of cultural words, translation techniques, and cultural elements found in the Indonesian horror film Mangkujiwo 2 (2020), focusing on translations from Indonesian (source language) into English (target language). The study found 20 instances of cultural words and their corresponding translation techniques. The results indicate four types of cultural words: material culture (35%), social culture (20%), ecology (5%), and gestures and habits (40%). Seven translation techniques were identified: adaptation (15%), amplification (25%), pure borrowing (5%), borrowing (25%), description (15%), literal translation (10%), and modulation (5%). The translation of cultural words in films presents unique challenges due to their deep-rooted significance within specific cultural contexts. This study examines the techniques used to translate cultural references in Mangkujiwo 2, particularly those rooted in Javanese mysticism, such as spiritual beliefs, rituals, and supernatural entities linked to figures like Ratu Kidul. Drawing on Peter Newmark’s (1988) translation theory and Molina and Albir’s (2002) framework, the study analyzes how translators preserve the cultural essence of Javanese mysticism for an international audience. The findings reveal that transference and amplification are predominantly used to retain the authenticity of terms like Kejawen and ritualistic expressions, while descriptive equivalents help clarify culturally specific concepts. These choices reflect the significant cultural differences between Javanese traditions and English-speaking audiences.
Putri FebriantiFebri Dhany Triwibowo

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/14071

This study aims to analyze the cultural concepts of on (obligation or debt of gratitude), giri
(social obligation), and gimu (unlimited moral duty) in the Japanese folktale Issun Boshi, as a reflection
of traditional Japanese values. Culture is a fundamental aspect of society that manifests through thought
patterns, behavior, and traditions passed down through generations. Japanese culture, with its collective
mindset and emphasis on interpersonal relationships, is strongly shaped by values such as on, giri, and
gimu, which govern moral and social obligations. The study employs a qualitative research approach
using a descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected through literature review and note-taking
techniques, focusing on the Japanese folktale Issun Boshi. Referential identity analysis is used to
interpret the meaning of utterances in the folktale in relation to real-world cultural contexts. The
theoretical framework draws from literary anthropology (Suwardi Endraswara) and cultural ethics (Ruth
Benedict), enabling a deeper understanding of how cultural values are embedded in literature. The
findings reveal that on is reflected in the protagonist’s gratitude and devotion to his parents (oya no on)
and to his employer or benefactor (nushi no on), while giri is manifested in his sense of responsibility
and loyalty toward the noble figure who accepts him (me ue no giri). Gimu is shown through the
protagonist’s unwavering duty and moral perseverance, even when full repayment of kindness is
unattainable. These values, deeply rooted in Japanese society, are effectively communicated through
folktales like Issun Boshi, highlighting the role of literature in the transmission of ethical norms and
collective identity. This study not only enriches cross-cultural understanding but also contributes to
moral education by illustrating the importance of gratitude, loyalty, and reciprocal responsibility in
Japanese culture.
Leonardo Jeffry SoebagioIrma Winingsih

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/14892

This research investigates the translation techniques employed in the English and Indonesian versions of the manga "Mijuku na Futari de Gozaimasu ga" with a particular focus on modulation. By analyzing excerpts from chapters 1 to 5, the study aims to assess how modulation affects translation accuracy and cultural relevance. The analysis reveals that both translations utilize modulation to adapt the original text for their respective audiences, with Indonesian translations often incorporating culturally specific expressions that enhance emotional depth. In contrast, English translations tend to maintain a straightforward approach, which may resonate differently with readers. The research employs a qualitative comparative analysis method, assigning accuracy scores to each translation based on a defined scale. Findings indicate that effective modulation can significantly improve reader comprehension while preserving the essence of the original narrative. However, some instances highlight challenges in maintaining accuracy when translating idiomatic expressions or culturally specific terms. This study contributes to the broader field of translation studies by illustrating the complexities involved in translating manga and emphasizing the vital role of cultural context in achieving effective translations. Ultimately, this research underscores that translation is not merely a linguistic exercise but an intricate process that requires understanding cultural nuances and reader expectations. The results provide valuable insights for translators and scholars alike, suggesting avenues for further exploration into how various translation strategies influence reader engagement across different languages and cultures.
Hildansyah YuliswanaRaden Arief Nugroho

https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/14893

The animated movie “Khumba” tells the story of a zebra born without a black stripe who tries to find an identity and be accepted by his community. This study investigates how translation methods and techniques work well when conveying messages to a children's audience in the target language by using a strategic reduction approach that simplifies important elements such as themes, characters and dialog. The results of the analysis show that cultural adaptation and contextual translation are essential to maintain the relevance of the movie. Moral messages about courage and self-acceptance can be conveyed more effectively through the use of simple language and appropriate humor. Although some of the original cultural components have been removed, the main message of the movie can still be understood by the target audience. In conclusion of this study, effective translation methods are essential to convey the message of children's films in full. Recommendations for future movie translation include the use of appropriate language to enhance children's understanding and cultural context. https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/unclle/article/view/14897

This research aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts present in the dialogues of characters in Shadow and Bone Season 1 Episode 1, as well as to investigate how translation techniques help maintain the original illocutionary force. Based on Searle’s (1979) theory, five categories of illocutionary acts are identified: representatives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. Furthermore, this study applies Molina and Albir’s (2002) theory of translation techniques to analyze how the Indonesian subtitles convey both the meaning and function of the original utterances. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the utterances are categorized by illocutionary type and analyzed in terms of how they are translated. The findings indicate that representative acts are the most frequently occurring, followed by directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. This study highlights the importance of illocutionary acts in shaping narrative development, character relationships, and message delivery in audiovisual media. Furthermore, it underscores the relevance of applying both pragmatic and translation theories to understand how language achieves communicative goals across languages.
Syafira Aulia PutriRaden Arief Nugroho
