Scurrah https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/struktural/article/view/12224
This research aims to identify the affixing processes present in the novel "Queen of The Night" and determine the comparative frequency of data between prefixes and suffixes. The study utilizes the descriptive qualitative research method to analyze the data. The researcher identified the affixing processes by examining words containing prefixes or suffixes, categorizing them into two types: prefixes and suffixes, and describing them. The data for this research were words found in the novel "Queen of The Night" by A.J Scurrah. The findings indicated that out of 100 data analyzed from the prologue to Chapter 2 of the novel, the majority (76 data) involved suffixing. The analysis further revealed that the most frequent suffixes are -ed, accounting for 34 data or 45%, followed by -ing with 20 data or 26.30%, and -s with 13 data or 17%. The least common suffixes found in the process were -ity, -ty, -es, and -er, each appearing only once or 1.3%. In contrast, only 24 data involved prefixing out of the 100 data analyzed. The most common prefixes were Un-, Re-, and In-, each occurring 5 times or 20.83% in their respective categories. The least common prefixes, Mis-, Im-, and Ex-, each appeared only once or 4,1%, making them the least frequent in the prefixing process. Descriptive qualitative method is utilized to describe and explain the results of this research in detailed manner. The source data of this research is taken in the form of screenshots and character lines from the film. This research reveals the type of anthropomorphism displayed by Kong is imaginative anthropomorphism, as his character is treated as human through both his emotions and thoughts. Lastly, Kong fulfills every stage of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and achieves self-actualization. His trial has become a pivotal moment in LGBTQ history because it sparked conversations about a topic deemed taboo and even illegal in Victorian England. This article aims to further investigate the portrayal of Oscar Wilde’s case in two neo-Victorian biographical novels The Master (2004) by Colm Tóibín and The New Life (2023) by Tom Crewe. The focus is on the representation of the case (Oscar Wilde’s conviction) and other related narrative aspects, particularly the impacts on the protagonists and plot development. The texts are interpreted in reference to Michel Foucault’s concept of power and Eve Kosofsky’s Sedgwick closet metaphor. Research findings show that ‘silence’ is an important aspect of Victorian discourse formation about homosexuality, and the two novels (re)construct Oscar Wilde’s case as part of the narrative strategy to resist this mainstream discourse. The study’s findings support the idea that neo-Victorian biofiction is more than just a sort of nostalgia. It has become a powerful tool for criticising the past and bringing forth the historically silenced voice.
Paramita Ayuningtyas Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan Asri Saraswati Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of International Seminar on Translation, Applied Linguistics, Literature, and Cultural Studies 2025-02-07 2025-02-07 2 1 334 340 Pastry Section's Efforts to Maintain Product Quality to Provide the Best Standards to Guests at Novotel Hotel Semarang https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/struktural/article/view/12364
This research aims to explain the pastry section's efforts in maintaining product quality to provide the best standards to guests at the Novotel Hotel Semarang. This study aims to understand how metaphor serves as a tool for expressing their identities in learning. Tasked with crafting poems metaphorizing their experiences as learners, students used symbols such as nature, objects, and abstract states to convey complex aspects of self and growth in academia. The research applied a qualitative design with a thematic analysis framework, focusing on the symbolic language in the student poetry. Methodologically, each poem was examined through close reading to identify recurring metaphors and themes. These metaphors were then analyzed and categorized, exploring how they reflect the students' inner worlds and learning perceptions. The 15 participants were third-semester students who drew on personal and universal imagery inspired by a model poem provided as an example. Findings reveal various themes in students' selfconcept as learners, including resilience, adaptability, introspection, and the duality of strength and vulnerability. Many students chose metaphors from nature (such as "tree" or "water"), symbolizing growth and adaptability, or from functional objects (such as "book" or "canvas"), representing knowledge and potential. Others used abstract ideas like "shadow" and "twilight" to capture the nuanced feelings tied to learning and identity formation. The study concludes that metaphorical poetry is a reflective tool, encouraging students to articulate and examine their learning identities. This approach demonstrates the potential of creative assignments in fostering introspection, making it valuable for educators seeking to deepen student engagement. The findings highlight metaphor as a powerful means for students to conceptualize and communicate their educational journeys.
Muhammad Rifqi Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of International Seminar on Translation, Applied Linguistics, Literature, and Cultural Studies 2025-02-17 2025-02-17 2 1 425 444 Myths In Cerpen Terbaik Tempo: Setan Becak, Ayoveva, hingga Chicago May https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/struktural/article/view/12474
This study aims to understand the repetition of myths and reveal the meaning in a collection of short stories by Koran Tempo that published in 2016. The aim of this research is to
analyze the impact of certification on quality management and hotel operational
efficiency. This research used a qualitative approach by using in-depth interviews
with the management of Indoluxe Hotel Jogjakarta and secondary data from
certification reports. The research results show that the implementation of
mandatory certification at Indoluxe Hotel Jogjakarta has a positive impact on the
quality management system. Certification helps hotels increase customer
satisfaction through better and consistent service standards. In addition,
certification provides guidance for hotel operational management, especially in
terms of human resource management, facility maintenance, and guest security
and safety. Nevertheless, there are challenges faced when maintaining
certification standards, especially related to higher operational costs and
demands to continue carrying out internal evaluations that also require high cost.
However, certification has encouraged hotels to be more efficient in managing
resources and daily operations, which ultimately increases the hotel's
competitiveness in the market. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this research with Taylor Swift's song All Too Well (the 10-minute Version) as the data source. The techniques in this research began with searching and marking words that have affixation, then grouping the data according to its type (prefix or suffix), its meaning, and calculating the percentage of occurrence of each affix. In the song All Too Well (the 10-minute Version), there were 54 words that have affixation, which consists of 2 types of prefixes from 3 different words and 12 types of suffixes from 51 different words. Prefix re- was the prefix with the highest percentage of occurrence at 75% and found in 2 words. On the other hand, the suffix that had the highest percentage is suffix -ed, with a percentage of 33.33% and found in 17 words. The relation between the most frequent affixation data (of suffix-ed) with the content of the song All Too Well (the 10-minute version), was that the frequent occurrence of suffix-ed in the lyrics described a story that happened in the past. This is in line with the dominant occurrence of the suffix -ed, which had the meaning of a past tense marker. Theoretically, this research adds literature of affixing analysis in morphology as sub-discipline of linguistics, while empirically, the findings shed light on the creative inclusion of affixing, i.e. prefixing and suffixing, in a modern popular song
Muhamad Wildan Jumanto Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of International Seminar on Translation, Applied Linguistics, Literature, and Cultural Studies 2025-01-24 2025-01-24 2 1 17 26 Local Wisdom-Based Tourism Development through Pasola Attraction in Sumba: An Innovative Approach https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/struktural/article/view/12227
Developing tourism based on local wisdom is an important strategy in strengthening the attractiveness and sustainability of the tourism industry. Taro (Colocasia esculenta) is a local tuber that is rich in nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fiber and various vitamins, but its use in the food industry is still relatively minimal (Saleh, 2023). This research was conducted by combining experimental and qualitative methods, using One Case Study design. In the experimental process, sensory tests were carried out to evaluate cream soup which was formulated using taro flour as a substitute for conventional thickening agents. This sensory test involved sensory panelists and general consumers, with a total sample of 15 people including 3 experts. Panelists were asked to assess the sensory attributes, which include taste, aroma, texture and color of the cream soup. In addition, qualitative methods were applied through in depth interviews with respondents to gain further understanding regarding their perceptions of taro flour-based cream soup. This approach provides additional insight into consumer preferences, as well as the reasons behind acceptance or dissatisfaction with the product being tested. The research results showed that the use of taro flour was able to make a positive contribution to the sensory attributes of cream soup, especially in terms of taste and texture. Besides that, the color and aroma of the product also received good ratings from the panelists. Cream soup products made from taro flour show a fairly high level of consumer acceptance, indicating that taro flour has great potential to be used as an alternative to thickeners in the food industry. It employs qualitative methods to analyze the phenomenon of simile translation as a type of figurative language in The Scarlet Letter novel. The presence of various markers such as like, as, as if, and resemble demonstrates the richness of imagery in literature. The results reveal that 32 data points are classified as similes based on the simile marker words according to Pierini's theory that is preposition like (17 data), followed by as (9 data), as if (5 data), and the verb resemble (1 datum). In other words, the author prefers to use like simile markers in the source language, which are mostly translated into seperti in the target language. Only three out of six simile translation strategies were found in this study: literal translation (27 data), replacement of vehicle with a different vehicle (3 data), and reduction of the simile to its sense (2 data). The survey on the acceptability of simile translations shows that 29 out of 32 data points are acceptable, while 3 translations are deemed less acceptable. In conclusion, the translation of the simile in The Scarlet Letter novel often uses a literal translation strategy and produces good acceptability from the perspective of Indonesian target readers.
Milichia Christin Sauyai Esriaty Sega Kendenan Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of International Seminar on Translation, Applied Linguistics, Literature, and Cultural Studies 2025-01-31 2025-01-31 2 1 258 265 Exploring Characters Transformation Dynamics in Alternate Universe Fanfiction of Pride and Prejudice https://publikasi.dinus.ac.id/struktural/article/view/12273
Since Henry Jenkins in 1992, the study of fanfiction has evolved significantly, encompassing areas such as feminism, queer theory, and mass culture; nonetheless, many researchers continue to overlook the fundamental aspect that fanfiction is primarily a work of literature, hence neglecting its literary qualities.
