THE VIOLATION OF COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES IN THE "ESCAPE ROOM" MOVIE

Abstract


This study is entitled The Violation of Cooperative Principles in the “Escape Room” movie. It aims to find the types of violation of cooperative principles done by the characters in the of “Escape Room” movie. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study are the utterances that occur in the “Escape Room” movie, while the unit of analysis of this study is the data containing forms of every utterances violation of cooperative principles. The technique used in collecting data is called documentation technique. The data obtained is classified based on the form of violation of cooperative principles proposed by Grice (1996). The result of the research showed that the form of violation of the cooperative principles occurs in the Escape Room movie consist of four maxims: the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of manner. Those violations occur due to the same perception between the speech participants and the speech partners in discussing an issue, solving a problem, and giving an explanation.
